How to make perfect, juicy shredded chicken

 

Making shredded chicken is one of those fickle things.  It seems like it should be easy and hard to mess up, but it turns out that it is a bit more challenging!  Learn how to make juicy shredded chicken that will put a smile on your face!

One way I used to shred chicken was to boil it and then shred it, but I found that it would end up rubbery.  

After much experimenting, I have figure out the best way to shred chicken!

There is 1 main thing that I do my shredded chicken that makes a huge difference.

I cover it in oil and spices before putting it in the crock pot.   BOOM.  Nothing fancy, but it sure does help with juiciness and flavor!

 

How to Make Juicy Shredded Chicken

I like to give my shredded chicken a little flavor.  Just a subtle flavor though so it can be the base for just about anything.  

I use this recipe as my base meal prep ALL THE TIME. If you want just regular shredded chicken, simply skip the spices.  Easy Peasy.

This recipe is for 4 chicken breasts.  You can increase or decrease the stock, oils, etc.. based on how many chicken breasts you plan to shred.

Step 1 

In a medium-size bowl, add olive oil and spices.

Add chicken and mix around until chicken breasts are completely covered in oil and spices.

Add chicken broth to crock pot.  

Step 4

Add chicken to crock pot and dump any remaining oil and spices on top of the breasts.

Bake on high for 4 hours or low for 6 hours.  It is important to make sure they are done, but to not overcook them as that will dry them out.

Using 2 large forks, shred the chicken.  I recommend doing this INSIDE the crock pot. After the chicken is shredded, let sit for 10 minutes so it can soak up extra juice.

How do you shred chicken by hand?

Super easy!  Using 2 forks, simply poke the chicken so the forks are side by side and pull the forks apart so the chicken rips apart.  And repeat until it is shredded the way you like it!  

 

What can I do with shredded chicken?

It is great for meal prep!  I like to make a batch of shredded chicken, separate it into different containers and add flavors!

You could also use it for fajitas or tacos!

Materials

  • 4 chicken breasts
  • 1/2 cup chicken stock
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoons Italian Seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic

Tools

  • Crock pot
  • Mixing Bowl

Instructions

  1. Add chicken stock to crock pot
  2. In a large ziplock bag (or bowl), add chicken breasts, olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian Seasoning and minced garlic.
  3. Seal and squish chicken around until fully coated.
  4. Add contents of ziplock bag to crock pot.
  5. Cook for 4 hours on high or 6 hours on low.
  6. Using 2 forks, shred chicken in crock pot.
  7. Let sit in warm for 10 minutes to soak up any juices.
